Artists, AI and Creator Rights

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the way creative work is made, shared, and valued. From image generators and creative assistants to increasingly sophisticated AI platforms, artists are being asked to navigate new technologies, new opportunities, and new risks.

But what do visual artists actually think about AI? How are these tools being used in practice? And how do copyright law and platform terms and conditions affect artists’ rights and creative control?

Researchers from the University of New South Wales, University of Newcastle, and the Arts Law Centre of Australia are seeking participants for an anonymous survey exploring how visual artists engage with AI tools, applications, and platforms in their creative practice, including experiences of AI, copyright, creator rights, creative control, and the terms and conditions that govern AI technologies.

The survey forms part of the Australian Research Council Discovery Project Artists and Generative-AI: Copyright and Private Regulation of Creativity (DP260100770).

The findings will help inform artist advocacy, legal education, policy development, and future resources designed to support creators in an increasingly AI-enabled environment.
